Is Poker Gambling?
Cathey-Cram, 2007-11-29 10:21:05
I know this sounds like an easy "Yes" answer, but poker is definitely a different kind of gambling than roulette, craps, or playing the lottery. Poker takes skill unlike casino-type games. Should online poker be illegal just like those other online gambling games, or should poker be an exemption since it is a game of skill. Also, there are professional poker players making millions of dollars. You don't see professional roulette players or professional lottery players. This is some peoples jobs where they collect all their income from. Taking away online poker could put people out of jobs.Just a thought.

I agree that there is a great deal of skill involved, but that skill can only be used to increase the likelyhood of you winning. AT BEST, in a game of Texas Hold Em', you will get youself into a situation where you are a 4 to 1 favorite to win a given hand. That's still a 20% chance that you will lose and it is still gambling.

You can't get skilled in it, it's all just dumb luck. While there is an element of chance in poker, it's largely a game of skill. But, whether its based on skill or chance doesn't change whether it's gambling or not.If you wager money it is gambling

- the luck/skill question splits responders along a very particular axis.
- those who know poker (as i do, having been a keen student of the game and player for about 15 years), will tell you with no trace of a doubt, that it is a game of skill.
- it is a game of skill with an undeniable and significant luck element built-in, which must be accounted for in order to play well.
- those that have never played poker, and do not know the rules, betting system, odds calculation, opponent reading and so forth, will lump it in the stereotypical "gambling" category alongside roulette, blackjack, and other games in which the outcome is fixed by probabilities (and always in favour of the house).
- ever heard of a roulette tournament?
- or a lottery championship?
- check out winners of the world series of poker, from 1970 to 2006.
- it's no lucky coincidence that doyle brunson has won it twice, and stu unger three times, against increasingly large fields.
- they won because they are among the very best and most skilful players

That is why you bet in poker, you don't place your investment.Think about this, if you were matched with 5 other players that had the exact same "skill" as you, 5 would lose each hand and only one would win.

- online poker is not legal in the US mostly because our government cannot figure out a way to tax the profits from the company providing the poker service.

Even though skill is involved, there is also a lot of chance involved as well since you will generally lose if you don't get dealt a winnable hand. Also, there are few safeguards to prevent cheating in online poker. The software itself could be rigged, or you could have players working in conjuction by chatting with each other online, etc.Maybe the government should outlaw "wagering" to get around the whole "skill" argument.
- It is however the wagering that causes most states to outlaw poker and theat you are wagering against other players.
- Poker is no more a game of chance than monopoly!
- It takes incredable skill to master poker, mainly the skills needed to read and influence decisions.

It is a mix of skill and luck, just like fi betting on horses is. counting cards takes skill, but its still used in GamblingBut than again, world-champions poker can almost never repeat this achievement, so the luck part seems to be quite big. MM i see what you are saying cos any other gambling is luck, rather than skill.
